about

Everything you hear is a manipulation of a 3-second recording of a gunshot, performed live using a drumKat and a Behringer FCB1010. The drumKat gave me a very physical, often violent way to trigger the sounds, and each section of the piece uses MIDI parameters like velocity to control different things – not just loudness, but pitch, release time, etc.

When I perform this, I do a little stealth "I'm looking over my setup to make sure everything's good to go" fake-out to trigger the opening fade. As it's coming up, I start doing drum corps-style sticking maneuvers, air drumming, getting more and more frenetic and violent as it rises, stopping suddenly with the audio. The album cover gives you some idea what that looks like. The clicks that you hear are my sticks knocking together.

As that opening track, "Drill," gets densest toward about 6:20, I'm beating the living **** out of the poor drumKat.
